André Ribeiro
Light loves to play in the dark.
French-born André Ribeiro creates dramatic modern jewelry from elastomer caoutchouc,
i.e., rubber, and diamond, highlighting the beautiful and ironic contrast of the materials.
He sees this marriage of materials as an example of an ancient, inner attitude applied to
the ongoing task of logically evolving and pursuing a tradition. He explores contemporary
and unusual materials for use in his jewelry while maintaining a consistent formal
appearance.
The black, matte rubber and the firey and brilliant high-quality diamonds provide the
ultimate visual contrast. The diamonds wink from within their dark, commonplace
surroundings. André says, “The minimalist, understated, radically simplified
shape unites Oriental aesthetic and cultural traditions with certain ideas that were
first articulated during the Bauhaus period. In a certain sense, the formal expression has
become non existent.”
